3 Common questions
How is astaxanthin different from other carotenoids?
Unlike beta-carotene, astaxanthin: (1) does NOT convert to vitamin A (no hypervitaminosis A risk), (2) does NOT become pro-oxidant at high doses, and (3) uniquely spans the cell membrane bilayer, protecting both the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions [1].
Why is wild salmon pink?
Wild salmon eat krill and algae that produce astaxanthin. The carotenoid accumulates in their flesh, giving the characteristic pink-red color. Farm-raised salmon is often paler unless astaxanthin is added to feed [1].
Is 4 mg enough?
Most clinical trials showing benefits used 4–12 mg/day. For skin: 4–6 mg/day is common. For exercise recovery: 12 mg/day. There is no established optimal dose [2].
Natural vs synthetic — does it matter?
Yes. Natural H. pluvialis astaxanthin (3S,3'S isomer) has higher antioxidant potency than synthetic (racemic mixture) and is the form used in clinical trials [1].
