Clinical verdict
Boron is 'probably essential' — reduces urinary Ca/Mg losses, supports vitamin D, and may reduce SHBG. The testosterone marketing is extrapolated from a postmenopausal women study — NOT proven in young men. 3–6 mg/day is reasonable in a bone health stack. UL: 20 mg/day [1] [2].

3 Common questions
Does boron boost testosterone?
The 1987 USDA study showed increased testosterone in BORON-DEPLETED postmenopausal women. This has been extrapolated to young men — which is NOT supported by data. Boron may reduce SHBG modestly, but dramatic testosterone claims are overstated [2].
Should I take boron for bones?
Reasonable as part of a bone health stack (with Ca, D3, K2, Mg). Boron reduces urinary Ca/Mg losses and supports vitamin D metabolism. 3–6 mg/day is sufficient [1] [2].
Is boron essential?
Not officially classified as essential by IOM, but 'probably essential' based on accumulating evidence. No RDA exists; there is a UL of 20 mg/day [1].
4 Clinical evidence

Strong

Reduces urinary calcium and magnesium excretion in controlled metabolic studies (USDA) [2]. Involved in vitamin D metabolism [1]. HIGH

Moderate

Bone health: supplementation improved bone density markers in postmenopausal women in the USDA study [2]. Hormone modulation: reduced SHBG → increased free estradiol and testosterone in boron-depleted postmenopausal women [2]. Anti-inflammatory: reduced CRP in some small studies [1]. Arthritis: epidemiological association (low-boron areas have higher OA rates) [1]. MODERATE

Insufficient

Testosterone boosting in young men (extrapolated from postmenopausal data) [2]. Cancer prevention [1]. Cognitive function [1]. Wound healing [1]. LOW
5 Safety, toxicity & adverse events

Relative

⚠ Hormone-sensitive conditions — boron may increase estradiol; use caution in estrogen-receptor-positive cancers
⚠ Renal impairment — reduced boron excretion

🚩 Red flags

Patient taking borax as supplement — NOT safe [1]
Exceeding 20 mg/day UL [1]
6 Interactions

Drug interactions

Estrogen therapy Minor
Mechanism: Boron may increase estradiol levels. [2]
Effect: Additive estrogenic effect. [2]
Action: Monitor [2].
