How does SAMe compare to glucosamine for joints? ▼
Both have Cochrane-level evidence for OA comparable to NSAIDs. Glucosamine is cheaper ($15–30/month) and taken once daily. SAMe is more expensive ($40–80/month), requires TID dosing and enteric coating, but has the added benefit of potential mood improvement. For pure joint indications with cost concern: glucosamine. Why is SAMe so expensive? ▼
SAMe is chemically unstable — manufacturing requires specialized processes (enzymatic synthesis from yeast, immediate stabilization as tosylate/butanedisulfonate salt, nitrogen-flushed blister packaging, enteric coating). Can I take SAMe with antidepressants? ▼
Caution required. SAMe has serotonergic activity and can cause serotonin syndrome when combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs. For joint indications in patients already on antidepressants: consult prescriber before adding SAMe [1].
