Choline is the most underappreciated essential nutrient — 90% of Americans fall below the AI. Eggs are the single best practical source (147 mg/egg). Most prenatal vitamins still contain zero or negligible choline despite its critical role in fetal brain development. Deficiency causes fatty liver within weeks. For cognitive applications, use citicoline or alpha-GPC (cross BBB), not choline bitartrate [1] [4] [5] [7].

Why don't most prenatal vitamins contain choline? ▼
Historical oversight. The IOM recognized choline as essential only in 1998, and the link to fetal brain development became clear even later [2]. The American Medical Association now recommends that prenatal vitamins include choline [7]. Check your prenatal vitamin label — most still contain 0–55 mg choline, far below the 450 mg AI for pregnancy.
Are eggs the best choline source? ▼
Yes — eggs are the most practical concentrated source. One large egg provides ~147 mg choline, primarily as phosphatidylcholine in the yolk [6]. Three eggs provide approximately the AI. Liver is richer per serving but less commonly consumed. The old recommendation to limit eggs for cholesterol concerns inadvertently reduced choline intake [4].
What's the difference between choline bitartrate, citicoline, and alpha-GPC? ▼
Choline bitartrate is the cheapest but does NOT significantly cross the blood-brain barrier. Citicoline (CDP-choline) and alpha-GPC both cross the BBB and are preferred for cognitive applications [5]. For simply meeting the AI and supporting liver function, any form works.
Can choline cause fishy body odor? ▼
Yes — at high doses (>3,500 mg/day), choline is converted to trimethylamine (TMA) by gut bacteria, causing a fish-like odor. Individuals with TMAU (trimethylaminuria) are especially sensitive [2]. Staying below 3,500 mg/day avoids this in most people.
