Taurine is NOT a stimulant despite its energy drink association — it has calming/GABAergic properties. The 2023 Science paper (mouse lifespan +10–12%) made taurine the hottest aging research molecule. Conditionally essential in neonates. Vegans have 22% lower levels (zero in plant foods). Safe up to 6 g/day in trials. The most abundant free amino acid in the body (~70 g) [1] [2] [3].

3 Common questions
Does taurine in energy drinks cause heart problems?
No — the cardiovascular concerns with energy drinks relate to caffeine (300+ mg) and sugar, not taurine. Taurine at 1,000 mg is well within safe range and may actually be cardioprotective [2]. The European Food Safety Authority concluded taurine in energy drinks does not raise safety concerns at typical intake levels.
Can taurine extend human lifespan?
The 2023 Science study showed 10–12% lifespan extension in mice, which is remarkable [3]. However, no human longevity study exists yet. Observational data show that taurine levels decline with aging in humans too, and lower levels correlate with age-related diseases. Human translational studies are underway.
Do vegans need taurine supplements?
Vegans have ~22% lower plasma taurine but synthesize taurine endogenously from cysteine [1]. There are no documented clinical consequences of low taurine in adult vegans. However, given the emerging longevity data, some vegans may choose to supplement (500–1,000 mg/day).
Is taurine a stimulant?
No — despite its association with energy drinks, taurine is not a stimulant. It has inhibitory/GABAergic properties and may actually reduce the jitteriness of caffeine [2]. The energy effect of energy drinks comes from caffeine and sugar, not taurine.

Essential for bile acid conjugation (taurocholic acid) [1]. Critical for retinal photoreceptor development and maintenance (retinal taurine depletion → photoreceptor degeneration in animal models) [1]. Conditionally essential in neonates and premature infants — added to infant formula worldwide since the 1980s [4]. Osmolyte function in brain volume regulation [1]. HIGH

Moderate

Longevity: the 2023 Science study showed taurine supplementation (mice: 1,000 mg/kg/day) extended median lifespan by 10–12%, improved muscle strength, bone density, glucose tolerance, and reduced markers of aging [3]. This has not yet been replicated in humans. Heart failure: meta-analysis of small trials showed improved exercise capacity and LVEF with 2–6 g/day [2]. Blood pressure: meta-analysis showed modest 2–3 mmHg SBP reduction [2]. Exercise performance: some evidence for reduced muscle damage and improved endurance [2]. MODERATE
