Glucosamine sulfate
Aminosaccharide used for osteoarthritis management. Strong evidence from European RCTs (GUIDE study) for knee OA pain and radiological progression. Prescription medicine in most EU countries (Dona/Rottapharm). Shellfish-derived.
How it works (mechanism of action)
Acts on cellular signalling pathways relevant to the documented clinical indications. Contains bioactive compounds with enzyme-modulating, receptor-binding, or antioxidant properties studied in peer-reviewed literature.
Evidence grades: A=Strong RCT evidence · B=Good clinical trials · C=Limited trials · D=Preliminary/traditional
SHELLFISH ALLERGY: derived from shellfish chitin — caution in shellfish-allergic individuals (allergen in chitin, not glucosamine itself, but caution warranted). Warfarin: well-documented interaction — INR increase reported; monitor INR. Blood glucose: mild insulin resistance effect in some studies — monitor in diabetes. Asthma: case reports of exacerbation. Prescription medicine in EU.
