About

Essential oil from clove buds and leaves containing primarily eugenol. Powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial. Used as flavouring and in dental preparations. Well-known hepatotoxicity at high doses.

Hepatotoxicity at high doses (eugenol). Anticoagulant effect (eugenol inhibits platelet aggregation) — avoid with anticoagulants. Hypoglycaemic effect — monitor blood glucose. Children: avoid concentrated preparations. Dental use (eugenol): contact sensitisation.
