CDP-Choline (Citicoline)
CDP-Choline (Citicoline) provides both choline and cytidine, which converts to uridine in the body. Strong evidence for cognitive support in vascular dementia, brain injury recovery, and age-related cognitive decline. Used as prescription drug in many countries.
How it works (mechanism of action)
Serves as choline donor for acetylcholine and phosphatidylcholine synthesis. Cytidine → uridine → UTP → phosphatidylcholine (membrane synthesis). Also enhances dopamine receptor density.
Evidence grades: A=Strong RCT evidence · B=Good clinical trials · C=Limited trials · D=Preliminary/traditional
Very well-tolerated. Low side effect profile. Insomnia if taken late in day. As a choline source, excessive choline intake (from multiple choline sources) can cause fishy body odour (trimethylaminuria).
