Semi-essential amino acid serving as substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) — producing nitric oxide (NO) which mediates vasodilation, immune function, and cellular signalling. Also stimulates growth hormone and insulin secretion. Widely used for cardiovascular health, erectile dysfunction, exercise performance, and wound healing.
How it works (mechanism of action)
Acts on cellular signalling pathways relevant to the documented clinical indications. Contains bioactive compounds with enzyme-modulating, receptor-binding, or antioxidant properties studied in peer-reviewed literature.
Herpes simplex: L-arginine promotes HSV replication — contraindicated in active herpes outbreaks; consider lysine supplementation. Myocardial infarction survivors: CAUTION — VINTAGE II trial showed increased mortality in post-MI patients (2006). Hypotension risk with vasodilators, PDE5 inhibitors, antihypertensives. Asthma patients: may worsen inflammation. Pregnancy: insufficient high-dose data.
